Targeted microbial binding to host glycans has also been studied for decades. But such biological roles can only explain some of the remarkable complexity and organismal diversity of glycans in nature. Glycobiology publishes original articles across a wide range of related subjects. The journal seeks to publish articles that provide novel information about the biological significance of glycans or glycosylation. Shorter Communications are also published providing timely findings that will have a significant impact for investigators in the field.

Job description. The research in the Division of Glycoscience is focused on various areas of Glycobiology, comprising fundamental research on

Glycobiology encompasses the study of the complex sugars found attached to proteins and cell membranes as well as the receptors that recognise them. One focus within this theme is structural characterisation of such glycans, using mass spectrometry as a primary tool. A simplified and broad classification is presented, especially emphasizing the roles of organism-intrinsic and organism-extrinsic glycan-binding proteins in recognizing glycans. There is some overlap between the categories, e.g., some structural properties involve specific recognition of glycans.

Established as the leading journal in the field, Glycobiology provides a unique forum dedicated to research into the biological functions of glycans, including glycoproteins, glycolipids, proteoglycans and free oligosaccharides, and on proteins that specifically interact with glycans (including lectins, glycosyltransferases, and glycosidases). Additional products for glycoprotein research include the Sialic Acid Florescence Labeling Kit for efficient modification of sialic acid-containing moieties with DMB prior to detection by HPLC, and kits for purification of glycan samples (including hydrazine-treated samples) prior to fluorescent labeling with 2-aminopyridine (pyridylamination reaction).

Glycomics is defined as the scientific pursuit of the collection of carbohydrates found in the extracellular matrix, intracellularly, and associated with the cell membrane. Glycobiology is an emerging field that studies glycomics. Carbohydrates and Binding Proteins

Defined in the broadest sense, glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis and biology of glycans (carbohydrates). N-Glycans are covalently attached to protein at asparagine (Asn) residues by an N-glycosidic bond. Although diverse sugars are attached to Asn in prokaryotes (Chapters 21 and 22), all eukaryotic N-glycans begin with GlcNAcβ1–Asn and are the focus of this chapter.
